Composition Admissions Guidelines

 

Incoming freshmen should take the following steps to apply to the Composition program:

  1. Complete the University of Missouri Undergraduate Admissions Application
  2. Submit a portfolio of sample compositions (scores and recordings/MIDI) to the composition faculty by January 5, 2019. Email the following to Jacob Gotlib (gotlibj@missouri.edu)
    • Email PDFs of three (3) representative scores and corresponding recordings/MIDI 
    • A resume containing:
      • A list of works composed with instrumentation and dates of composition
      • A list of performances your works have received, if any
      • Performance accomplishments on your primary instrument/voice
      • Any awards, honors, scholarships, or other recognition you've received
      • Full contact information
  3. Schedule an audition on a major instrument/voice.
  4. Finalists will be contacted to schedule an interview with the composition faculty for February 18, 2019 or March 4, 2019.

International Students must also fulfill the English Language Requirement in one the following ways:

  1. Presenting the results of the following tests with these minimum scores:
  2. Complete the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) English exam with grade of B or higher, or
  3. Score a 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB) English A: Language & Literature HL exam.

International applicants should check this link for a full list of other specific requirements and more information.

Current undergraduate music majors not previously admitted to the Composition program must apply, typically toward the end of the sophomore year of study.

  1. File an application with the coordinator of the Composition Area (Dr. Stefan Freund) no later than April 1st of the sophomore year
  2. Take an examination in stylistic writing, analysis, dictation, sight-singing, and keyboard. Students may be exempt from this exam if the application has been approved by the composition faculty and a grade of B or above has been earned in all composition and theory courses.

All Composition applicants are considered for a full-tuition Sinquefield Scholarship
